The Problem
Parking lots can be dangerous for kids. Parents have to worry about whether their young children will stay safe from other vehicles and predators while they are busy loading and unloading their car.
HOW MIGHT WE...
...improve how parents safely load and unload multiple children from their vehicles?
Target Audience
Our target users are parents to multiple children and toddlers between the ages of 0-5 that needs help getting out of the car.
Corral Structure Improvement
Park Safe App
-
Connects to corral and monitors the children
-
streams video of the children
-
Parents can monitor children with corral cam.
Family Spaces
-
Larger parking spaces
-
Room around the car to fully open the door, load, and unload children
Park Safe Corral
-
Corral to put children in
-
Keeps children safe from danger while parents are occupied.
-
Approachable media to attract and distract kids
The Solution
The valuable insights we got from the additional research also opened our eyes to some vulnerabilities we had not yet taken into concern.
From insights to action
-
The need for a manual override system, in case of emergencies.
-
Having a countdown system that lets the child know that their time inside of the ParkSafe structure is coming to an end.
-
The need for health and safety kits.
-
Appropriate child protection safety seat for infants and toddlers.
-
Access to a reservation system in order to book parking spaces in advance.
Story Board
Based on the concept developed during the ideation phase, we create a possible scenario for our persona, Robin, using the app to pre-book a spot in one of the corrals.
Wireflow
Based on the scenario, we created a process flow chart to get an idea of what screen we needed to develop.
Advertisment
Park Safe Corral would have LED displays on the outside of the ends of the structure for monetization of advertisements.
Users would choose to either pay for each time of usage or sign up to a subscription system that they would pay an amount each month and then have the ability to use as much as they like.
Subscriptions
The service would also be sustained through funding from business owners, cities, developers, and advertisers.

Buissnesses
-
Increased revenue from more foot traffic
-
Larger customer base: More families can go out
Parents
Lot owners
-
Parents will have easier access to local destinations
-
Can take their children more places
-
ParkSafe revenue share: incentive to install ParkSafe system
SHOPPING
ACCESSIBILITY

FOOT TRAFFIC
CUSTOMER BASE
Value Proposition
-
Convincing parking lot owners that the revenue they get will equate to the parking lot spaces used to fit this system.
-
Individuals without small children might download the app for access to priority parking
-
Due to the current parking info structure in place, the space is limited. For that reason we have a small number of spaces available and each ParkSAFE structure is only meant to house 1 family unit.
Vulnerabilites
How we plan to move
forward....
...We want to continue servicing single family units but also offer additional options that would allow a larger number of families to use ParkSAFE.
With future iterations we hope to be able to revisit that initial larger structure , where children from multiple families could use a single unit. This would see the need for a ParkSAFE attendant. The Attendant would be live scanned and have to pass a level 2 background check The attendant would also be CPR and first aid certified.

Family spaces and the accompanied ParkSafe app is a system that makes parking and unloading the car at a parking lot more convent and stress-free for people with children.
Academic project | May 2020 | 7 Weeks
200 children are killed and 5000 are injured
in parking lots yearly
This is the story of designing Park Safe Family spaces and the accompanied ParkSafe app that makes parking and unloading the car at a parking lot more convent and stress-free for people with children.
Research & Insights
Primary research was collected from interviews with people within the target audience and observations in parking spaces.
1.
Parking spaces are tight making it difficult for parents to remove and secure their children.
2.
Parents follow a “routine” when loading and unloading their children to try to control a situation that changes based on unpredictable variables.
3.
Parents are looking for a way to supervise and manage their children while they juggle loading/unloading other children and possessions from the car.

3.
While you are unloading groceries and you don’t have your eyes on your kids ...somebody could just take the cart and roll your kid away.
Riley Jones
It’s difficult because you kind of have to put trust in a very young child and a responsibility on them that they’re too young to really take on. As a parent, I don’t know any other way of handling it.
Parker Stuart
Sometimes car parking spaces are really small and they’re not big enough even to open the door to get the kids out.

Common Pain Points
Qualitative Research insights
1.
Parents enjoy the idea of a safe space for small children that keep them out of harm's way, while loading and unloading.
2.
Parents believe their children will see the corral as a positive experience.
3.
Most parents are comfortable with using tech as a form of entertainment for their children.
We conducted a user survey with people in our target audience to gather the measured data & get our potential user's thoughts and feedback on our concept.
How many children do you have?
1 Child
2 Children
3 Children
You turn your head for one second, you can’t even blink when your kids are in the parking lot because they will run. Even when they reach a certain age and if your kid is having a tantrum, chances are they’re not really caring about the safety of anyone.

Cleaning Corral
Our solution:
-
An ultra-thin coating made of ultraviolet light- emitting diodes (UV-LED) will be integrated into the building materials.
-
This ultra-thin coating kills any germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. It is currently in development at Purdue University.
We discovered one crucial consideration we had not approached before: hygiene. Therefore, we decided to move forward with that area of focus.
